NFL owners narrowly failed to pass a proposal to prohibit the tush push. The fate of the short-yardage strategy was on the agenda at their spring meetings.

The Jets were one of the ten teams to vote against the ban. The Super Bowl Champion Eagles have used the “tush push” to turn short yardage situations into almost automatic conversions. Using the mobile 6’1” 223 pound Jalen Hurts, the play has turned into a big advantage for Philadelphia.

The Browns’ vote shouldn’t come as a surprise given their deep Philadelphia connections, as Mary Kay Cabot pointed out on the podcast: “You’ve got Andrew (Berry) having worked for Howie Roseman, the great GM of the Eagles, you’ve got Catherine Hickman, who worked for the Eagles... It’s almost like the Browns sister team in the NFL.”

The final vote on the proposed ban of the Tush Push was 22-10, and at least 24 votes were needed to pass it. The Chicago Bears were one of the 22 teams who voted to ban the play.

The Eagles have essentially perfected the play, leading to a significantly higher success rate with the Tush Push (87%) compared to the league average (71%). With 124 attempts since 2022, they have run the play more often than any other team, leading to 33 touchdowns and 106 first downs.

The Tush Push was saved Wednesday, falling two votes short of the 24 required for a ban. The Saints, who have former Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as their head coach, were among the 10 teams that voted against the proposal to eliminate the play.
