The Chicago Cubs recalled top prospect Matt Shaw from Triple-A Iowa on Monday and designated infielder Nicky Lopez for assignment. Chicago optioned the 23-year-old Shaw to Iowa on April 15 after a disappointing start to the rookie third baseman’s big league career.
Shaw, 23, is ranked as the team's top prospect by MLB.com and The Athletic, both of which also rate him as a top 25 prospect overall. He was the Cubs' 2023 first-round draft pick ( No. 13 overall) out of Maryland.
The Chicago Cubs called up third baseman Matt Shaw from Triple-A Iowa on Monday for the start of a three-game series in Miami, sources told the Chicago Tribune. Manager Craig Counsell hinted at the move Sunday after the Cubs swept the White Sox in the opening round of the City Series at Wrigley Field, and it will be made official Monday.
The third baseman was sent down to Triple-A after his first 18 major-league games in order to get him back on track offensively. He was hitting .172 at the time.
